When it comes to coaching for the Kansas City Chiefs, there aren’t many more positions in the NFL that are more polarizing—especially the offensive coordinator position. Not only is it polarizing because you help coach the offense that quarterback Patrick Mahomes operates, but you’re instantly expected to compete for a Super Bowl every single year. Oh yeah, and you’re head coach Andy Reid’s OC.

Being the Chiefs’ OC has its pros and cons

There’s one huge pro that should entice candidates, despite all the cons. If you’re the OC who turns things around, you get head coach interviews—the quickest way to a head coaching job. With recent offensive struggles, a turnaround would make you a strong HC candidate.

When you’re the OC, if the Chiefs’ offense gets turned around, you get everything. The offense has been terrible. Since Matt Nagy became the Chiefs’ OC in 2023 after being fired by the Bears, the offense has declined each year. In 2022, the Chiefs averaged 29 points per game. In 2023, they averaged 21; in 2024, 22; and this past season, 21.

Before Nagy, KC averaged at least 28 points per game in each Mahomes-era season, including 35 once. Nagy is linked to recent offensive struggles despite personnel factors. Under Bieniemy, the offense was more effective, and some believe KC is waiting for Bears RB coach Bieniemy to lose so they can re-hire him as OC.

Of course, the cons are all of the above that we previously mentioned, but in a negative light. The attention is all on you. When the offense is bad, you’re the one to blame, even though we all know it’s Reid’s offense. Then people call for your job instantly. There’s so much pressure that comes with this job, maybe more than any other OC job in the NFL.

The Chiefs’ OC job isn’t that one job no one wants as much as everyone thinks it is.
