The Kansas City Chiefs endured one of the most devastating events in franchise history, and certainly the worst of the dynasty era. Patrick Mahomes tore his ACL and LCL late in the season.

Still, there was never a moment when fans or media doubted Mahomes would recover. If any player can make this comeback seem effortless, it’s Mahomes. So when he announced a target return for Week 1 of the 2026 season, no one was surprised. Chiefs owner Clark Hunt certainly wasn’t.

“Yeah, so I was with Patrick (Mahomes) a couple of days ago in our training room, watching him go through the work that he’s doing to get back on the field with the rehab,” Hunt said. “And nobody works harder than Patrick. He certainly has a goal of being back at the beginning of the season. I wouldn’t put it past him. He’s somebody in the past who’s healed very quickly. And again, his work ethic, I think, gives them a huge advantage in getting back and being ready to play in 2026.”

The Chiefs could start 2026 a bit rusty

If Mahomes is ready by Week 1, there is a chance that he misses out on a large portion, or all of, training camp. There is a chance Mahomes is just barely not ready for Week 1 and ready by Week 2; if this offense is rusty, it could be a problem. No matter when the Chiefs start, they could be rusty.

Mahomes usually doens’t have much of an offseason—it’s a lot of preparation for the season so that the offense is as ready as it can be. This season, with Mahomes having to worry about his injury and the rehab, the offense could be seen as rusty. But simply having Mahomes ready by the beginning of the season, or near it, is as ideal as it gets for the situation the Chiefs are in.
