Tyrann Mathieu will always have a place in Kansas City, even if he leaves the Chiefs this offseason. There's a chance the Chiefs don't reach Super Bowl LIV without Mathieu.
They definitely don't win it without him.
He is a guy that will always be remembered as the heart and soul of this team. But now, one of the defense's biggest leaders of the last few years looks to be heading to a new team. As much as fans probably don't want this to happen, it's becoming more and more of a reality the further the offseason goes.
Tyrann Mathieu looks to be done with the Chiefs
The Chiefs made some moves this offseason, some moves that would have maybe made Mathieu question his value to the team. For Tyrann Mathieu to feel the way he does is understandable. He wanted to stay with Kansas City, but the Chiefs did not want to pay him, for a few different reasons.
First, the Chiefs did not, and would not have the money down the road. Signing Mathieu to the deal he wanted would put Kansas City in a very tough position over the next few years as they would have no money to keep building their team.
Secondly, the Chiefs were concerned with giving Mathieu -who will be 30 in May- a longer, more expensive deal. The former LSU Tiger hasn't shown signs of deterioration, however, 30 can be old for a strong safety that plays as physical as he does.
So, the Chiefs wanted to go in another direction, and sign a guy who was younger, and cheaper in Justin Reid. You can imagine that when Tyrann saw that deal get done, he was probably hurt by the organization.
Mathieu is visiting with the New Orleans Saints, per Adam Schefter. What exactly does this mean? Well, the New Orleans area is where Mathieu is from, and I'm sure he would love to play for his hometown team.
It doesn't look good for Mathieu's and the Chiefs' futures, that's for sure. And while fans will still have a tremendous amount of respect and love for the Honey badger. it's likely they'll be left wondering "what happened?" for a good while.
