New Orleans Saints S Tyrann Mathieu recently revealed what he feels went wrong between himself and the Kansas City Chiefs.
Mathieu took to Twitter (now X) to react to the release of Denver Broncos S Justin Simmons. In doing so, he got involved in some banter with fans regarding his past tendency to go on social media rants.
"I want to go on a rant because my favorite safety got released but he’s a pro’s pro & one of the best in the game," Mathieu said. "He will land on his feet!"
A fan responded, "That was a short rant!"
Mathieu replied, "I haven’t rant in years it’s the reason I got fired from last job lol."
Mathieu tended to get into it with Chiefs fans on Twitter during his tenure with the team from 2019 through 2021. When push came to shove during the 2022 NFL offseason, Kansas City decided to go in a different direction with Justin Reid despite both Mathieu's camp and the Chiefs maintaining they wanted a reunion. He clearly feels that some of his past social media rants had something to do with the reason he didn't wind up with a long-term deal.
Mathieu's family still lives in Kansas City, even though he ended up going to play for his hometown team in New Orleans. Mathieu signed a two-year contract extension to keep him with the Saints on Thursday. It appears the deal was already signed before his Twitter fingers were back in action.
