Texans HC DeMeco Ryans says what needs to be said about Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes ahead of Week 14 matchup on ‘Sunday Night Football’
DeMeco Ryans has been through this before with the Chiefs.
Sunday Night Football, when the Kansas City Chiefs take on the Houston Texans, is going to be a must-watch. This game is crucial for both teams’ playoff hopes, and the spotlight will be on Patrick Mahomes and C.J. Stroud, two of the league’s top quarterbacks, as they showcase their skills in a high-stakes matchup.
Neither has had quite the individual or team years they would have hoped for. However, they are both guys who can still destroy you if you let them. And, the Texans aren’t going to be fooled when it comes to Mahomes, either. They’ve played him far too many times, in far too many important games, to know Mahomes. They know that just because the team is struggling, it doesn’t mean Mahomes won’t do what he does.
Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans talks Mahomes in 2025
“Patrick is still Patrick. Let’s call him Houdini,” Ryans said. “He finds a way to make plays all over the field. That’s why this team has always been a threat. That’s why their games are always close because of Patrick and his capabilities of extending plays, and not just to run plays, not to run the football, but the way he extends plays, the way he finds his guys down the field, it’s unique. There aren’t many guys in the league who can do it the way Patrick does.
“Although it may seem like they’re scrambled plays, they’re connected and coordinated in where they’re finishing, and Patrick knows the spots. He can run the football and convert third downs in those critical moments as well. The guys in the back end, you’ve got to cover them twice. Because he can extend plays, they can go on and on and on. You have to be aware of the guys in your zone, your area, and you have to stay on them.”
The thing is, if Mahomes and the Chiefs were having a good year record-wise and were winning all these one-score games rather than losing them, he would be the MVP favorite. He’s got 3,238 passing yards, which is third in the league, and 22 passing touchdowns, which is fifth. He also leads the league in scramble yards, has 348 rushing yards, and four rushing touchdowns. If Mahomes rushes for 42 more yards this season and gets one more rushing touchdown, he’d have career highs in both.
But the team isn’t winning. And, he has had his fair share of moments where he has played badly. Has he lost games single-handedly? No, but he has had some games that just were not up to par for what he is in this league. None of that means anything, though.
Ryans knows that underestimating Mahomes is the last thing you can do. He’s a stone-cold killer, and Ryan knows that’s what’s coming on Sunday Night Football if Houston isn’t at its best.
