Grade The Contract: Minnesota Vikings get an absolute steal in James Pierre with team friendly structure

The contract itself is minimal, and it’s very freindly on the salary cap.

The Minnesota Vikings haven’t been the most active in free agency thus far, but they have made one move in signing cornerback James Pierre to a two-year contract. It’s a high-upside signing reportedly worth $8.5 million.

It’s a similar path the Vikings took last season when they brought in Isaiah Rodgers on a two-year contract worth up to $11 million. He rewarded them with starting-level quarterback play and the first-ever 99.9 Pro Football Focus grade in a single game.

James Pierre contract details are favorable for the Vikings

A two-year, $8.5 million contract isn’t a lot to have on the salary cap, but the Vikings aren’t exactly flush with salary cap space, meaning they need to be aware of where every dollar goes. NFL insider Aaron Wilson has the contract details, and it’s good for the Vikings.

  • $2.5 million signing bonus
  • $1.215 million salary in 2026 (guaranteed)
  • $3.565 million salary in 2027
  • $510k in per-game roster bonuses each season
  • $100k workout bonus each year

The only question we have coming with this contract is how the signing bonus is spread out. If they have three void years, it will be $500k added to the salary cap each season, but if there are no void years, it will be $1.25 million added on to his base salary.

The cap hits appear to set up like this:

SeasonSalary Cap Hit
2026$3.075 million
2026 (3 void years)$2.325 million
2027$5.425 million
2027 (3 void years)$4.675 million

That’s very palatable for the Vikings. Plus, they will be able to subtract $885k from the salary cap, as that is the smallest contract on the roster. It’s a very good contract for a player who could give the Vikings starting level cornerback play in a nickel defense.

Overall, this is a slam dunk contract for the Vikings with at most $2 million dead if they want to cut bait after the season is over. Even if they don’t and he struggles at cornerback, Pierre has proven to be a good special teams player.
