The Detroit Lions have had some contract concerns this summer, and one of the big ones was with second-round pick Tate Ratledge. Until today, he was one of 30 second-round picks who had not signed their rookie deal. The Lions managed to get it done with him under the wire.
The holdup was all based on the Houston Texans and Cleveland Browns giving Jayden Higgins and Carson Schwesinger fully guaranteed contracts, respectively. That caused the agents in the rest of the second round to see if they could get their clients the same type of deal.
Ratledge's agents were unable to secure that for him. Especially after the 49ers signed 43rd pick Alfred Collins to a deal that was not fully guaranteed late Wednesday night. However, they still managed to get him some solid guarantees.
Ratledge can now participate in training camp, and that is big for the Lions since they are expected to have him starting this season either at center or one of the guard spots. We'll see which one soon enough.
Holdout concerns now shift from Ratledge over to veteran linebacker Alex Anzalone. He is also reportedly looking for a new deal, and he did not participate in voluntary offseason training with the Lions. Something that started all this concern. Now we wait to see if he shows up at training camp on the 19th.
Anzalone has been a very important piece to this Lions defense, and when you look at his contract and see that he has no guarantees and no security left on it, you can understand why he's looking for a new deal. We'll see if he's going to get it soon enough.

The Detroit Lions start training camp on Wednesday, and it's time to get one more pre-camp mailbag out of the way. That's not accurate. The Lions start camp this week. The rookies are reporting on Wednesday, the 16th, and the veterans report on Saturday, the 19th. Dan Campbell will hold his first presser, and practice […]
