The angst continues for Washington Commanders' fans as a deal with All-Pro WR Terry McLaurin still has not been reached yet since he publicly spoke about his frustrations. Fans can breathe a sigh of relief for now, but the end isn't near it seems.
ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler said he spoke with a source in Washington, and provided a positive update on the situation, but also clarified that things aren't in a good place for one certain reason.
The rest of the league hates to hear this from Washington
Fowler said that Washington has "no plans of trading Terry McLaurin.", and that they want him around long-term which should calm fans for now. This comes just a few days after another NFL reporter Albert Breer said that the New England Patriots would be a team interested in trading for McLaurin IF he ever became available for a trade.
Trading McLaurin to the Steelers for TJ Watt, or any other team in the league has never been something that I've worried about. Washington knows how valuable McLaurin is to the team on and off the field, and even to the fan base who has voiced their opinions lately as well.
It's hard to put a value on what a player does off the field, but you still have to write a check for what they do on the field, and that's where things are in a really bad spot for Washington and McLaurin.
This contract negotiation could take a while due to one major factor
Fowler also added that he senses that Washington is "not even close" on meeting the current WR market for McLaurin's contract, and that there's a "big gap to fill." The current market is around $30+ million per year for wide receivers thanks to DK Metcalf and Garrett Wilson, and Washington might be more towards the higher 20's on an annual basis.
McLaurin coming out and speaking about his frustrations recently is likely due to him feeling the sense that Washington doesn't want to give him a contract that the market currently suggests.
I doubt the stalemate is because of the year length of the contract, but as a wide receiver turning 30 years old in September, GM Adam Peters is likely playing the analytical side of business by thinking about the end game of this contract.
I'm still very confident that Washington will get a deal done with McLaurin, and that all will be fine in Commanders land before the season starts, it just might take longer than what everyone is hoping for. Even Lamar Jackson requested a trade before his major contract extension, and he's thriving in Baltimore. Just give it time, and relax.
Jayden Daniels is most impacted by Terry McLaurin’s contract dilemma, and it’s easy to see why
Washington needs to extend Terry to maximize Jayden’s production and development
