DeMarvion Overshown took over the Dallas Cowboys' news cycle this week when he announced he was changing his jersey number to zero, a goal he'd had since the NFL changed its uniform policy during his rookie offseason.
Unfortunately, Cowboys fans will have to wait more than they'd like to see Overshown rock the new look as he's still rehabbing from a season-ending knee injury that's expected to knock him out from the start of the season.
Forth Worth Star-Telegram's Nick Harris provided an update on Overshown's rehab, indicating the linebacker is in the movement phase of his rehab and "remains on pace to return around midseason 2025, with early November as a realistic ballpark estimate."
The news is encouraging considering Overshown's availability for all of the 2025 season was in question shortly after his injury. However, it also serves as a reminder of a problem that the Cowboys are unlikely to solve in the 2025 NFL Draft: Filling the glaring hole at linebacker next to second-year player Marist Liufau.
Currently, the Cowboys' LB room includes free agent signing Jack Sanborn and trade addition Kenneth Murray, as well as team veteran Damone Clark, who was benched by Mike Zimmer but has a clean slate with a new defensive coordinator in town.
Though Sanborn and Murray could emerge as solid starters in Overshown's absence, the position is a major question mark for Matt Eberflus' defense entering the 2025 season. With more pressing needs at wide receiver, running back, and the trenches, the Cowboys are unlikely to target a LB in the first round of the Draft. Of the team's 16 of 30 reported pre-daft visits, there's no first-round LB prospect. Versatile defenders Jalon Walker (Georgia) and Jihaad Campbell (Alabama) could be options should the Cowboys be interested in addressing the position.
If the front office doesn't use the No. 12 overall pick on LB, which would be understandable given other urgencies across the roster, it's improbable the team can find a starting-caliber LB later on. They did with Liufau last year but it took him a while to really get going and banking on a Day 2 or Day 3 prospect to start right away comes with a good chunk of risk.
That brings the question, can Sanborn, Murray, or Clark provide enough quality in the second level of the defense to keep Overshown's injury from derailing the season in the first eight-ish games? Only time will tell but it's clear the answer will need to come from the players that are already on the roster because Dallas is unlikely to get it in Green Bay at the end of the month.
