The New England Patriots only have one kicker on the roster, but it's not expected to stay that way for long.
Special teams coordinator Jeremy Springer told reporters recently that the team will be adding another kicker to the roster to compete with John Parker Romo.
And to do so, they have two clear routes.
The first is to address it in the draft, and the Patriots are already starting to do the work on that. The Draft Network's Justin Melo reports that the Patriots have a private workout with Florida State kicker Ryan Fitzgerald, who finished the season going 13-for-13.
Melo called him "arguably the top kicker in the 2025 NFL Draft."
Andres Borregales (Miami), Ben Sauls (Pittsburgh), Gino Garcia (Texas Tech), and Caden Davis (Ole Miss) are also potential prospects.
But, there is also another option.
The Indianapolis Colts recently released kicker Matt Gay, who has a connection with Springer.
Gay spent the 2022 season with the Los Angeles Rams, where Springer was serving as the assistant special teams coach. That year, Gay went 28 of 30 on his field goals.
Last year during training camp, the Patriots relied on a kicker competition, having it come down to Joey Slye and Chad Ryland, with Slye ultimately coming out on top. But this year, it will be two different players going up against each other.
The big question is whether that second will be a rookie or a veteran.
