The Washington Commanders are coming off a quieter free agency period than many expected.

After making it all the way to the NFC Championship, the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft is going to be crucial as they attempt to build off that success. They take a big swing in a new A to Z Sports mock draft, and it has the potential to be a home run on the defensive side of the ball.

Commanders land athletic phenom Shemar Stewart out of Texas A&M in a new mock draft

"Back-to-back edge rushers off the board as the Commanders add Shemar Stewart, who some believe is a project due to his lack of sack numbers. But his production data points towards him being an immediate producer in the NFL and that is one of the only glaring holes the Commanders need to find before Week 1 of the 2025 NFL season."

New A to Z Sports mock draft

Shemar Stewart was one of the biggest winners from this year's Scouting Combine, putting his unreal athleticism on full display. The Commanders have moved off multiple star defensive linemen over the past few years, Jonathan Allen this offseason and Montez Sweat and Chase Young in recent years. So, on paper, the two seem like a great fit together.

Some will look at Stewart's sack numbers and be very confused about how he ended up in consideration to be drafted in the first round. He only had 1.5 sacks in each of his three years at Texas A&M, and there's no denying those numbers aren't very inspiring. He created 33 quarterback hurries this past year, which is more than every defensive lineman in the discussion to be drafted in the first round other than Abdul Carter, who had 43 hurries. Numbers like that have many around the league who believe he has a lot of untapped potential as a pass rusher, which will lead to him taking a big leap at the next level.
