A very interesting trade-down opportunity with the Giants has presented itself to the Lions, Detroit could walk out with former fifth overall pick

Ok, here's what we know right now. The 2025 NFL Draft starts tonight, and the New York Giants are actively trying to find ways to get back into the back end of the first round. We also know that they're there are a ton of rumors going around about the Giants being open to trading Kayvon Thibodeaux, and there's some thought that he could be used as a sweetener to get back up.

This could be the opportunity the Detroit Lions are looking for. Now, right off the bat, I know what everyone is thinking. The Lions have shown us a million times in the past that they aren't willing to go out and sign a big-name edge or trade for one. Especially one who is going to command a large extension.

I get that, but this is a different situation. A lot of Lions fans told me over the last week that Detroit would be dumb to trade Jameson Williams now because he's under two-year control. Well, the Lions would be in the same boat with Thibodeaux.

Detroit would be getting Thibodeaux on his rookie deal with a cap hit of $9,971,513 in 2025, and then the ball is in 100% in their court to do whatever they want from there. They could either pick up his fifth-year option before May 1st and have him on the books in 2026 for $16.1 million, or they could just have him for the 2025 season and see what happens. They're not financially tied down to anything long-term unless they want to be.

Here's what the proposal would look like:

Lions get: Kayvon Thibodeaux and the 65th pick in the second round
Giants get: 28th pick

The Lions could then grab a solid offensive lineman like Georgia's Tate Rutlege, Sacramento State's Jackson Slater, Georgia's Dylan Fairchild (who Detroit had in for a top-30), or LSU's Miles Friazer.

This gives the Lions their premium edge rusher duo for the 2025 season. While Thibodeaux hasn't been as good as Aidan Hutchinson, he's still been pretty good. He had 38 pressures and six sacks last year and played a nice sidekick role to Brian Burns.

We'll see what happens tonight. Maybe Detroit is the smart team that takes advantage of this.
