With the 23rd selection in the 2025 NFL Draft, the Green Back Packers selected Texas wide receiver Matthew Golden. What a wild ride it has been for Golden, who began his career as one of the higher recruits that the Houston Cougars ever signed. After a ton of flashes in his two years with the team, Golden transferred to Texas and completely changed the trajectory of his career.
In his one season in Austin, Golden managed to become a focal point for the team down the stretch. He managed to lead the Longhorns with 58 receptions for 987 yards and nine touchdowns. Combine that production with his 4.29-second forty-yard dash time at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine, and Golden became one of the big risers in the entire class.
Golden betting on himself in that one season has now made him a millionaire over night. In an interview with the folks over at On3, the talented pass catcher was asked about where his first paycheck in the NFL was going to go. Golden gave a response that took some off guard, but made rooting for the guy very easy.
“Definitely get my grandma a house, man,” Golden explained. “We lost our property a couple of years ago. That’s somewhere I grew up when I was younger. It would be a blessing to get that back for my family. That’s where they all grew up. That’s where I grew up. I always told myself I wanted to do that. Now I’m in a position to do it. If it’s bound to happen, I’m going to make it happen.
“I’m going to kick the door down somewhere… it’s literally for sale right now,” he continued. “I have to go back and look at it every time. I actually had a camp last week for some kids back at home. I drive down that road. That’s where I grew up at. It’s actually the back street of the high school that I went to. My whole family lives on that backroad. They started knocking stuff down, and for me, man, it’s always been giving back to my people.”
Whether you like the pick or not, it’s pretty clear that Golden is going to become beloved by Packers fans very quickly. In a world of selfishness, Golden’s first thoughts go right towards others. It was a moment that encapsulates the best part of this entire draft process.
