Brad Holmes says he has ideas in mind for day two of the 2025 NFL Draft, but says that doesn't mean those plans for an edge rusher

The first round of the 2025 NFL Draft is in the books, and the Detroit Lions selected defensive tackle Tyleik Williams out of Ohio State. It was a pick that makes sense for the Lions, but it wasn't the one that everyone wanted.
Now, as we shift gears towards what the Lions might do on day two, the thought process is that there's still a good amount of edges left on the board, and maybe that might be the plan for them in the second and third rounds. Holmes addressed that on Thursday night, after the first round wrapped up.
“We’ll just kind of see. I have some ideas in mind already, and again, I’m not saying it’s going to be for that specific position." Holmes said. "It’s like I tell you guys all the time, we’re not going to reach for a position. The player has to be a productive player that plays that position. But yeah, there’s still some guys left up there. I’ve already got some ideas brewing. It might just be staying patient, it (might) just be going up, but we’ve just got to see how this thing unfolds.”
So there you go. If there were ever a time to say the word "smokescreen," maybe this is that time. You can't expect Holmes to give away his plan, but if he's going to make that elusive move for an edge, he might have to get on the phone and try to move to the top of the second round to do it.
There are some great players left on the board right now. Boston College's Donovan Ezeiruaku, Marshall's Mike Green, Texas A&M's Nic Scourton, Ole Miss' Princely Umanmielan, Ohio State's Jack Sawyer, and Michigan's Josaiah Stewart are all players who would fit Detroit very well.
This all feels really reminiscent of the 2021 NFL Draft when everyone knew the Lions needed a receiver and this crazy Holmes guy waited until the fourth round to take some guy named Amon-Ra St. Brown. Mayube Holmes isn't crazy after all. Perhaps he's looking for the right player to play that edge role, and he just didn't feel that guy was there at 28 or that maybe he could get who that guy is later.
We're going to find out Friday night.
Lions’ biggest remaining needs after the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft and best players still available, when will that edge get drafted?
The first round of the 2025 NFL Draft is in the books, and the Detroit Lions walked out with blank from blank state. Now we wait to see what happens on Friday night when the Lions have the 60th pick in the second round and the 102nd pick in the third round. With that in […]
