The first round of the 2025 NFL Draft is in the books, and the Detroit Lions got their guy in Tyleik William,s and now they're moving on to make sure that a couple more of their guys are taken care of. The Lions will exercise the fifth-year options of both Aidan Hutchinson and Jameson Williams just days before the May 1st deadline.
What does this mean? For starters, it means that the Lions will have both players here in 2026 for sure. It also means that both players will get guaranteed money for that season. For Hutchinson, his fifth-year option is $19.872 million. For Williams, he'll get a nice $15.493 million.
What does this mean for the ongoing extensions talk for Aidan Hutchinson? Ultimately, it means nothing. This doesn't mean that the Lions will suspend those talks or push them down the road. This should still be expected to happen at some point during this offseason. Picking up the fifth-year option and doing an extension is a pretty typical thing in the NFL.
This is another good example of the Lions taking care of their players because on top of getting that extension, Hurthcinson also gets that extra nearly $20 million guaranteed.
As for Williams, an extension is unlikely right now, but this move plants the Lions' flag on himso to speak. They're saying right here and now that they intend for him to be their guy going forward. Still, the expectation is that the Lions would like to see him play a full season without any drama or injuries.
If and when that happens, he'll get that $15 million in addition to whatever that big contract looks like when that time comes.
