One team in the Philadelphia Eagles’ division seems to be mocking their main formula for success: building a dominant offensive line.
The said team and one of the Eagles' biggest rivals — the Washington Commanders — have been making several similar moves over the last two years to build up their offensive line as much as possible.
In last year's draft, the Commanders selected TCU offensive lineman Brandon Coleman in the third round of the 2024 NFL draft with the 67th overall pick. They then gave guard Sam Cosmi a massive $74 million extension ahead of the regular season.
This past March, Washington traded multiple draft picks to the Houston Texans in exchange for Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil. But they didn't stop there.
On Day 1 of the 2025 NFL Draft, the Commanders used their 29th overall pick on Oregon offensive tackle Josh Conerly Jr., even though they had bigger needs on the defensive side of the ball.
It's worth mentioning that Conerly was a name on the Eagles' radar ahead of the draft after they invited him to Philly for a top-30 visit, and they may have drafted him themselves had he still been there at No. 31.
There is zero doubt Conerly Jr. will be an immediate boost to Washington's offensive line, which finished 2024 ranked eighth in pass-blocking and third in rushing attack.
While the Commanders are doing their best to close the gap in offensive line strength, it’s unlikely they’ll fully catch up to Philly anytime soon.
The Eagles have shown time and again that they’re committed to building and maintaining elite depth up front, even with most of their core offensive linemen already secured for the foreseeable future.
With Day 2 of the 2025 NFL Draft kicking off tonight, don’t be surprised if the Eagles use one of their second- or third-round picks to bring in yet another big body for the trenches.
