With the 2025 NFL Draft just over a week away, the expected Top-10 of the draft on opening night is still up in the air, outside of the first two selections.
For the Chicago Bears, sitting with the 10th overall pick, this makes projecting the first nine selections complicated, but the team is prepared for anything, including any Doomsday scenario that might play out.
Ideally, the board will work in the Bears' favor, allowing the team to stay put and draft one of their top targets in the first-round. That top target continues to be Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty.
The Bears main threat that could steal Jeanty off the board first is easily the Las Vegas Raiders, sitting with the sixth overall pick. Raiders head coach Pete Carroll has valued drafting RBs early during his time in Seattle and general manager John Spytek has extra incentives to take Jeanty.
However, the Raiders have a lot more roster holes than the Bears and might not have the luxury Chicago has to draft a running back in the Top-10. On Tuesday, NFL insider Albert Breer shared a similar sentiment, believing the Raiders could target another position instead and pass on Jeanty while finding their lead back later in the draft.
"It wouldn't surprise me if you see an offensive or defensive lineman here," Breer said about the Raiders pick at 6. "Again, I'm not ruling Ashton Jeanty out, I'm just saying it's too early for me to say right now that I think Jeanty is the pick."
Now, this isn't a definitive claim, and it shouldn't be because no one truly knows what any team would do. But, Breer makes a strong argument.
Given Spytek's background, prioritizing the trenches makes sense and there's quality backs available on Day 2 who can easily be a workhorse back for the Raiders. And saying the Raiders pass on Jeanty, the only thing Chicago would have to worry about is another team moving up ahead of them to draft Jeanty. Otherwise, he'll fall right in their lap at 10th overall.
That's the ideal plan for the Bears. Staying put at 10 and still coming away with your ideal target. That strategy worked out in 2024 landing Rome Odunze ninth overall, next week we'll see if Ryan Poles and the front office get lucky twice in a row.
