Backup quarterbacks don't get a lot of credit for everything they do.

They are mostly evaluated for how they play when filling in for the starting QB. While that is the most important part of their job, they bring value beyond just that. Backup QBs help the starter in any way they can, whether by providing veteran leadership, pushing them during practice, or helping them in the film room.

The Kansas City Chiefs have a new backup QB in Gardner Minshew. A six-year NFL veteran, Minshew has thrown for 11,950 yards and 68 touchdowns in 59 games played. Minshew is known for his competitive nature and bringing a high level of energy to his team.

In what has become an offseason tradition, Chiefs star QB Patrick Mahomes has brought many of his teammates down to Texas for throwing and workout sessions. Minshew is among those who have joined him, and Mahomes discussed the relationship that the two are building while speaking to the media on Wednesday.

"I've obviously met him (Minshew) through passing," Mahomes said. "He's been down here working with us, and I feel like we're gonna have a really good quarterback room in general. I think having Gardner, he's a guy that loves the game and comes in with the right mentality every single day, and a guy that pushes the envelope. And so I think having someone that's going to push me to take chances down the field, it'll be big. We'll continue to work and build our chemistry on the field, but also push each other off it as well."

A guy like Minshew can help keep the Chiefs' QB room positive and motivated. Having somebody who keeps things loose but is also competitive can help keep guys in a good state of mind. Minshew is signed to just a one-year contract, but if he plays well and establishes a good chemistry with Mahomes, the Chiefs may keep him around for the long-term.
