The story of Ed Orgeron ordering 15 lbs of crawfish to help lure Joe Burrow to LSU in 2018 is part of college football lore.
Burrow, who spent the first three seasons of his career as a backup with the Ohio State Buckeyes, famously just wanted to talk ball and eat crawfish during his visit to Baton Rouge in the spring of 2018.
Unfortunately, the restaurant that Orgeron took Burrow to was out of crawfish. Orgeron, however, saved the day by sending the restaurant manager out to find 15 lbs of crawfish.
The crawfish hail mary undoubtedly helped LSU land Burrow. But it was ultimately a "private conversation" that same night between Orgeron and Burrow that sealed the deal.
"Me and Joe had a conversation that night," said Orgeron during a recent appearance on 1010XL. "I said Joe, you're going to have to earn your spot here. But I do believe you're the best quarterback on my roster. And I've got two receivers, you don't know about them yet, their names are Ja'Marr Chase and Justin Jefferson, and they're a lot better than what you've got at Ohio State. Joe, you come here, we're going to win that national championship. And that was a private conversation me and him had. I think he saw that he had the opportunity to do great things at LSU."
Orgeron completely delivered on his pitch to Burrow. Chase and Jefferson quickly proved to be elite wide receivers (they're now two of the best wide receivers in the NFL). And LSU dominated in 2019 on their way to winning the national championship with a perfect 15-0 record.
A lot of coaches tell recruits/transfers that if they sign with their school then they'll win a national championship. Most of those promises go unfulfilled.
Burrow's experience at LSU, however, went exactly as Orgeron told him it would.
