This simply can’t happen

Thursday was a magical night for Indiana sports fans with the Indiana Pacers shocking the world and stealing Game 1 of the NBA Finals over the Oklahoma City Thunder after yet another Tyrese Haliburton game winner.

Pacers fans in Fort Wayne, Indiana, though, had a wild interruption during the final minutes of what would end up giving the franchise their first-ever series lead in an NBA Finals.

With 1:03 left in the fourth quarter of a one-score game in the NBA Finals, WPTA, a Fort Wayne news station, cut to a commercial during live game action. When the commercial begins, the Pacers have the ball down 110-107, and when the game reappears it is after Pascal Siakam scored a layup to make it a one-point game at 110-109. Ironically, the commercial was intended to encourage fans to stick around after the game to listen to their crew break down the results. In total, fans in Fort Wayne missed 26 seconds of game action, and during a game this close and with this high of stakes, it is flat out inexcusable. Thankfully, fans in Fort Wayne didn't miss Haliburton's game-winning shot, but I can only imagine what was going through the minds of fans when that commercial popped up while the Pacers had the ball and were down by one score.

The fact that this happened so close to Haliburton's game winner is unbelievable, though. My mind starts to wonder what would have happened if an Indiana news station had robbed a fan of watching that moment happen live. What if this occurred when Reggie Miller scored eight points in nine seconds? What if this happened when Marlon Jackson intercepted Tom Brady to send the Indianapolis Colts to the Super Bowl? Something like this can't happen during a live sports game, let alone during a game with stakes as high as Game 1 of the NBA Finals.

On the bright side, the Pacers now hold a 1-0 series lead over the Thunder and only have to win three of their next six potential games to win an NBA championship. The Pacers are closer than ever to winning a championship, and the Colts could certainly learn a thing or two from their success.
