After establishing a terrific pipeline of quarterbacks to the NFL with Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, and Jalen Hurts, the Oklahoma Sooners have hit a bit of a cold streak in recent years. While multiple transfers out, such as Caleb Williams and Spencer Rattler, have impacted that, the truth is that it's been five years since the Sooners have produced an NFL quarterback.
The Sooners are looking to change that here and rebuild that pipeline of talent. Quarterback John Mateer has his own NFL Draft buzz starting to build, and the Sooners have put themselves in a great place in their recruitment of 2026 quarterback Bowe Bentley, who they believe is their future under center.
Oklahoma has added another piece to that equation over the past weekend. The Sooners hosted a major recruiting event over the weekend, including football camps featuring several of the country's most talented recruits. One such recruit was 2027 quarterback Peyton Houston, who is Oklahoma's top target in the 2027 class.
Houston turned heads over the past weekend at camp for the Sooners, impressing the staff and fellow recruits with his arm talent and touch.
Oklahoma has made him a priority for months ever since Ben Arbuckle took over as offensive coordinator, and the steam has only begun to pick up in recent months. LSU, USC, Texas A&M, Georgia have all made offers. As I'm writing this piece, the news broke that Clemson has also gotten involved, making him an offer today.
The Sooners will have a tough battle on their hands to bring Houston in, but their efforts this weekend made a big impression. If Bentley's recruitment goes well and Arbuckle delivers on an overhauled and explosive offense this season, you'd have to feel confident in Oklahoma's chances to bring in the talented dual-threat Texas native.
Sooners’ John Mateer is already helping Oklahoma in recruiting their next QB, and he hasn’t even played a down yet
The Sooners are getting ready.
