The Ohio State Buckeyes don’t have another Jeremiah Smith joining the offense this season—but fortunately, they still have the star wideout for two more years.
Not every recruiting class brings a playmaker like Smith, but the Buckeyes did add a freshman with the potential to become a star college football player quickly.
Bringing in the No. 1 cornerback in the class of 2025 was a major win for Ohio State, and Devin Sanchez is expected to make a noticeable impact in his first year.
ESPN has labeled Ohio State cornerback Devin Sanchez as a freshman to watch in 2025
“Coveted for his length and sudden speed at 6-2, 185 pounds, Sanchez was the No. 1 cornerback prospect in the 2025 class. ESPN national recruiting analyst Craig Haubert has likened Sanchez to former Buckeyes standout Denzel Burke, and the five-star freshman should challenge junior Jermaine Mathews Jr. as Ohio State works to fill Burke’s starting spot under first-year defensive coordinator Matt Patricia.” — ESPN
The Buckeyes lost Denzel Burke and Jordan Hancock to the NFL Draft following their national championship season. Jermaine Mathews Jr. and Davison Igbinosun are expected to claim the top two cornerback spots.
Sophomores Aaron Scott Jr. and Bryce West will also be in the mix for playing time. Expect Sanchez to compete alongside them as a 6-foot-2 true freshman with a college-ready frame.
Playing as a true freshman at Ohio State is rare outside of special teams. However, the Buckeyes have been fortunate in recent years with elite talents who forced their way onto the field early. In 2025, it appears they may have another one of those special players—even if he isn’t quite on the same level as a certain wide receiver.
