You'll get your heart broken if you believe that T.J. Watt could wind up with the Lions, and why it's time to stop obsessing about edge rushers

What a long offseason this has been, and it's almost over. There has been an overarching theme to this whole thing, and it's that Lions fans want another edge rusher, and they would prefer for that guy to be elite.

Since February, we've had something of an edge rusher of the month club around here. It all started with Myles Garrett. Look, I was right there with a lot of Lions fans. I thought there was a possibility it could happen, and maybe I was dreaming a little too much.

It turns out there was no chance of that, and even if there were reports that the Lions had made calls to the Browns, Cleveland said they were never going to trade him, and Brad Holmes pretty much killed that dream at the NFL Combine.

Then it was Josh Sweat when free agency started. Adam Schefter did say that he was hearing that the Lions were interested, but then, when you saw him get $76 million, you could understand why that didn't happen.

Moving on to Trey Hendrickson. To me, this is the one that made the most sense, but it also never felt like a real possibility because of the team that Hendrickson plays for. The Bengals are the most hard headed team in the league, and they just don't do trades very often. Now we know that they're resuming talks, and that's probably going to get done.

Then there was the draft where the Lions decided to skip out on edge rusher until the sixth round when they took Ahmed Hassanein. If you ask me, I think this guy is going to be a stud, but I just don't know exactly when that starts for him.

Now, the guy Lions fans have turned their attention to is Steelers edge rusher J.J. Watt. While there are some podcasters out there who are saying that they have a friend who told them that they have a friend who told them that Watt wants to play for Dan Campbell, I just don't know why anyone would think there's any real possibility that this could ever happen.

In early April, Brad Holmes talked to local media about how they had to let Za'Darius Smith go because the Lions couldn't afford him. Smith was making $11 million with the inclusion of his 2026 void year.

Watt sat out the Steelers' mandatory minicamp under the pretenses that he was looking for a new deal. Watt is already the fifth-highest-paid edge in the NFL. He'd probably like to be the top dog again. Which is why it makes absolutely no sense for the Lions, even if Watt truly wanted it to happen.

Holmes has made it clear over and over again. He just does not see edge rusher the way the fans do. He feels comfortable with the group he has, and why shouldn't he? This defense was very good in 2024. One of the top units in the entire league until the injuries just got to be too much.

The Lions also don't appear to be keen on the idea of selling it all out just for one Super Bowl. They want to get their core players back on deals and try to milk this thing for all it's worth. The idea is that the Lions are good forever instead of good right now. Making a Madden-level trade is just not going to help that.

If you're hoping for Watt, you're likely to get your heart broken. Frankly, if you're hoping the Lions make any kind of big move at any position at any time this year, you're probably going to be disappointed.

NFL analyst believes Terrion Arnold is on the verge of being a bust

A first-round draft bust is not something the Detroit Lions have had to deal with in quite a while. Not since Jeff Okudah back in 2020. That one did not work out. Brad Holmes and his team have been pretty good at this whole drafting thing, but one analyst believes that the Lions might have […]
