The Seattle Seahawks have sniffed around the cornerback market over the last month. Now, they've made a free agent acquisition that plenty of fans will be fond of as next season looms ahead for Seattle.

A familiar face is returning to the Seahawks to compete for a role on their defense.

Seahawks signing CB Shaquill Griffin

According to Jordan Schultz, veteran CB Shaquill Griffin is returning to Seattle. Griffin spent 2017-2020 with the Seahawks and made one Pro Bowl as a defensive back there. It is a one-year, $3 million deal worth up to $4 million for Griffin in Seattle.

Depth has been a notable question mark at cornerback for the Seahawks this offseason.

Riq Woolen has proven to be a high upside player, but there was inconsistency in his game a season ago. Devon Witherspoon seems to have slot job wrapped up, and the Seahawks trust him plenty.

Josh Jobe is the fellow outside CB starting as of now. Jobe did not impress Pro Football Focus a season ago, totaling a 51 coverage grade for Seattle.

Griffin's impact for Seattle's secondary

Griffin immediately puts pressure on Jobe to perform. Plus, there's very little experience behind those outside CB starts for Seattle, so the veteran presence of Griffin could go a long way in that department as well.

The veteran cornerback had a productive season with the Minnesota Viking last year. He will look to build on that and prove he still has plenty left in the tank for his NFL career.

Shaquill Griffin’s stats as the nearest defender in coverage in 2024:

• 54 targets, 32 completions

• 82.2 rating allowed

• 2 TD/2 INT

• 6 pass breakups

• 8.1 yards allowed per target

The Seahawks didn't attack the cornerback position in the draft. The only defensive back selected was safety Nick Emmanworiearly in the second round.

Griffin's best season came for the Seahawks back in 2019, his third year in the NFL, when he made the Pro Bowl. After his rookie deal expired, the cornerback signed a three-year deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars in free agency, but was released after two seasons.

All in all, this match made all of the sense in the world for the player and team. The Seahawks know what to expect in Griffin's skillset, and he can also earn a impactful role for their unit in 2025 and possibly beyond.
