Among the flurry of news that sprouted on Monday to open the legal tampering period of NFL free agency, the Carolina Panthers made massive headlines. And, while the news is great for the player, it sheds light on where the franchise is as we speak.

The Panthers haven't been very successful really since their failure in the Super Bowl. Cam Newton, one of the most electrifying quarterbacks of all time, was not able to deliver the Panthers a Super Bowl ring in the franchise's second attempt at one, the first one falling to the New England Patriots. The second one, of course, was to the Denver Broncos.

And while Monday is a day for stud cornerback Jaycee Horn to celebrate, it really sheds light on something. Let's start with the news, that Horn is now the highest paid cornerback in NFL History. Now, that likely won't last long, but it's an accomplishment in itself. Horn is going to be paid around $25 million a year, one million more than Denver Broncos CB Patrick Surtain, the best cornerback in the league and the reigning Defensive Player of the Year.

As for the Panthers, having to pay that much for Horn is not a good look.

Let's start with this: Horn is a great player, is still very young, and doesn't quite have the right pieces around him to show his true potential. However, he is not the best cornerback in the league, or a top five cornerback, or maybe even top 10. He's certainly not a guy who should be the highest paid in NFL history, or even paid near the same amount as Surtain.

But, that's not a dig at him, that's what the Panthers have to do.

They are such a bad franchise now, that they not only have to overpay free agents to come play for the Panthers, but they also have to overpay their own players to get them to stay. That's sad, but it's the reality that the franchise is in, and this extension only proves that.
