It was known that Justin Fields was a big domino waiting to fall when free agency began around the NFL. Exactly that has happened with the former Ohio State star landing another starting job in the NFL.

Fields’ stay with the Pittsburgh Steelers lasts just one season, as he is heading to another AFC football team.

The former first-round pick has inked a two-year deal worth $40 million with $30 million guaranteed with the New York Jets. This deal was first reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Justin Fields reunites with Ohio State teammate Garrett Wilson in New York

When Fields arrives in New York to join the Jets, he will have some familiarity waiting on him. Garrett Wilson is the top wideout for the Jets and will instantly be Fields’ top option. You can also pencil in Wilson as the best wideout that Fields has to throw the football to since he arrived in the NFL.

The two spent the 2019 and 2020 seasons together in Columbus, which was Wilson’s freshman and sophomore seasons. As a freshman, Wilson caught 30 passes for 432 yards and five touchdowns. Then as a sophomore, Wilson improved to 723 yards and six touchdowns. Of course, Wilson played in a crowded wide receiver room with a bunch of NFL talent. Still, he was one of the top options for Fields in Columbus.

Since arriving in the NFL, Wilson has put together three straight 1,000-yard seasons. Expect more of that with the chemistry that Fields and Wilson already have together.

To this point in his career, Fields hasn’t been able to lock down a long-term starter job. He was the guy in Chicago for three seasons before they moved on to draft Caleb Williams. The six-game sample size for the Steelers was good last season for Fields and that’s why he was paid low-level starting money by the Jets.

This could be the spot where Fields is able to put it all together and be the franchise guy. New York is looking for a spark after the Aaron Rodgers era and they may have found it.
