The Cleveland Browns are parting ways with a veteran starter along their defense. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Browns are making DT Dalvin Tomlinson a post-June 1 cut to save cap space.

When looking at Tomlinson’s contract, it was always a real possibility that the Browns would move on after two years from the 31-year-old. With the move, the Browns save $6.4 million on the 2025 cap and will have that extra cash to spend.

Tomlinson signed with the Browns as an unrestricted free agent in 2023 after a pair of seasons with the Minnesota Vikings. The Browns have a rising defensive tackle in Mike Hall Jr., who proved his worth last season, but the only issue with him is staying on the field. Cleveland will need him available for more than nine games in 2025.

In 2024, Tomlinson had 26 tackles and three sacks with the Browns. He also recorded three sacks during the 2023 season with the team. All in all, the veteran defensive tackle appeared in 32 games with the club.

Writing is on the wall for the Browns to address defensive tackle in free agency

Cleveland now has a hold to fill on the defensive line and they need another starter to join Hall. Players like Dre’Mont Jones, Javon Hargrave, and Raekwon Davis could be names out there to watch. The Browns tried to sign both Jones and Hargrave a couple of years ago before they signed big free-agent deals elsewhere. Cleveland could also look to bring back a player like Maurice Hurst who is a familiar face, but he would be more of a depth signing.

Defensive tackle seems like a position that is going to be addressed in free agency, rather than through the draft. Cleveland isn’t going to use their first or second-round pick on a defensive tackle after taking Hall from Ohio State in the second round last season.

With the Browns now having some extra cash to spend and no moves made in free agency yet, jumping on the defensive tackle market could be coming. Tomlinson on the other hand gets a chance to join his fourth NFL team in his ninth season.
