Josh Allen was plenty rough around the edges when he entered the NFL. He had a canon of an arm and a world of athleticism in a big frame, but needed plenty of development to become the superstar that he is today.
Credit to him for putting in the work necessary, and always staying humble enough to stay a student. Allen's mechanics, from his footwork to his arm slot, have continuously improved throughout his NFL career.
Now, Colts' quarterback Anthony Richardson, who is teetering on the edge of being classified as a "bust," is turning to Allen for help.
Richardson is entering his third season after being selected fourth overall by the Colts, and his job is far from secure entering the offseason. NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe reported that Colts GM Chris Ballard said that they plan on having an open quarterback competition, despite not knowing who else will be on the roster at the position.
Last year, the Colts brought in veteran Joe Flacco, who enters free agency this offseason. Perhaps their plan is to bring him back for another run. Either way, Richardson, who has all the athletic ability in the world, needs to make some massive strides. As a quarterback that has rushing ability, a huge arm, and broke all kinds of Scouting Combine records for the quarterback position, there aren't many quarterbacks that he could learn from better than Allen.
For Richardson, he'll need to make massive leaps in his technique and his accuracy in order to reach the sky-high potential that the Colts saw in him when they selected him. Through 15 career games (he's missed 19 games in two seasons due to a combination of injuries and being benched), Richardson has a 50.6% completion percentage with 11 passing touchdowns and 13 interceptions. The thing about drafting raw talents is that they have to grow in order to hit. This is the risk that the Colts took. It's now up to Richardson and his development for the risk to pay off.
