Over the last two seasons, former Michigan star tight end Colston Loveland has a very strong argument as one of the top overall offensive players in all of college football. During that span, Loveland hauled in 101 receptions for 1,231 yards and nine touchdowns. Despite the Wolverines having a down season in 2024, Loveland was once again the absolute star for the offense.
Unfortunately, Loveland’s season was shut down following the tenth game against Northwestern due to a shoulder injury. That injury has left Loveland’s draft process somewhat clouded, but he did still opt to declare for the 2025 NFL Draft class. Loveland was available for the media on Thursday, and gave some insight into what his recovery timeline looks like.
“It’s doing good,” Loveland said about his injured shoulder. “It’s feeling great. Surgery went great. The X-Rays look really good. I am just taking it day by day.
“So from the 29th, after three months I am able to run around and catch balls, have the whole range,” he continued. “After six months, I can do contact.”
With that timeline in mind, Loveland will be back on the field at the end of May. The fact that he won't be able to withstand contact until the end of August does make it tricky when projecting his impact in the first year. Depending on the NFL team, some may also want to slow play his recovery to make sure there are no potential setbacks.
The great thing for Loveland is that he is still super young, and won't be 21 for several months. This is a long term play, but one that will undoubtedly pay off. The 6-5, 245-pound pass catcher is an outstanding athlete and route runner. The production he put up despite not playing in a very explosive passing offense was impressive.
