The NFL Scouting Combine is in full swing with the first group of players testing on Thursday night. The defensive tackles and edge rushers have the attention of the football world.
They are some of the best athletes on the football field, as they are asked to be explosive when rushing the passer while also holding blockers against the run.
The Minnesota Vikings need to address the defensive line in the worst way, especially when it comes to rushing the passer. They ranked second in run defense, but they didn’t get much pressure on the quarterback, prompting defensive coordinator Brian Flores to use the NASCAR package with four edge rushers.
Vikings draft target Derrick Harmon dominates NFL Scouting Combine
Imroving at defensive tackle is a must for the Vikings. They don’t just need improvements, they also need bodies with Jonathan Bullard and Jerry Tillery free agents.
One of the players that the Vikings have been mocked consistently is Oregon defensive tackle Derrick Harmon. He blew up the combine with his excellent testing numbers, including breaking five seconds in the 40-yard dash.
The versatility that Harmon provides is a huge factor. He can kick out and set an edge if needed while being able to play all over the line.
My scouting report emphasized the versatility element that he provides.
Oregon DT Derrick Harmon could be the perfect defensive linemen to fix the Vikings’ interior issues
Harmon could be the guy to fix everything
Harmon is a talented, versatile player who can do a little bit of everything for you. There are some issues to work through, including getting into a little bit better shape. However, the versatility would be a massive factor in the Vikings being interested.
They need an interior pass rusher, and Harmon's ability to play all across the line would maximize Brian Flores's use of his defensive line.
What else is really appealing with Harmon is the arm length. He has 34 3/8” arms that will allow him to handle tackles better and making it more difficult for blockers to out leverage him.
His excellent measurement and testing numbers could put him out of reach for the Vikings, especially with teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers, Los Angeles Chargers, and Green Bay Packers right in front of them.
Players often see their stock rise with the NFL Scouting Combine and it could prevent the Vikings from getting their hands on a great prospect who could help out in the trenches.
Vikings need to avoid trap that is trading for talented but ineffective starter
It’s a situation the Vikings need to stay away from
