The New York Giants' quarterback saga continues as the front office patiently awaits the pending decision of Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson's scheduled visit to the team on Friday.

According to reports, the Giants hope Rodgers decides to play with them, with Wilson acting like the likely backup plan. However, on Thursday, we got a surprise update with another name thrown into the ring: Joe Flacco.

According to ESPN's Field Yates, the Giants hosted Flacco on a visit on Thursday. It's not the update fans waiting for Rodgers' decision were hoping for, but still quite the twist to the team's quarterback search.

What role could Joe Flacco have on the Giants?

Naturally, Flacco would be a very different addition than the other starting-caliber quarterbacks they are targeting. If the Giants land Rodgers or Wilson, it's still highly possible they consider using the No. 3 overall pick on one of the top quarterbacks, if available. Given Rodgers' and Wilson's ages, both make sense as a "bridge" quarterback while the franchise develops a rookie behind them.

However, Flacco would be unlikely to get such an opportunity as he hasn't been a true starter since 2019, when the Denver Broncos acquired him via trade. He would probably end up being a backup to Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders in New York.

With that being said, it isn't far-fetched to believe Flacco could be in the mix even if the Giants sign Wilson or Rodgers. After all, he's been a solid NFL backup in the last few years (not that the bar for such praise is really high).

If signed to the Giants, Flacco would be on his fourth team in a four-year span, playing for the Indianapolis Colts, Cleveland Browns, and New York Jets since 2022. In that span, he has a 7-8 record as a starter.

At 40 years old, the Super Bowl winning quarterback has become a sidelines journeyman and could be a valuable asset to whichever quarterback the Giants pick in April, if any.

The bigger dominoes will fall as soon as Friday, however, as focus shifts to Wilson's visit to the Big Apple. Wilson visited the Cleveland Browns on Thursday and appears to be likely to sign if Rodgers chooses the Steelers as his next destination.
