Oklahoma Sooners football commit just became a hometown hero for something he did in the basketball state championship

There are a few recruits on this freshman 2025 class that played basketball as well, and those guys are hoopers, don't get it twisted, but they're either better at football, or it's the sport they love more.
One recruit, or commit I should say, just did something in basketball that will forever make him the hometown hero back at home. In fact, he probably already was going to be just based on the fact he is going to go to Oklahoma, but now, it's going to be amplified.
2025 edge rusher committed to Oklahoma, CJ Nickson, hit a game winner in the 4A Basketball State Championship. And man, it was a beautiful play.
CJ Nickson is a four-star athlete from the class of 2025 who committed to the Oklahoma Sooners on June 25, 2024. From Weatherford, Oklahoma, he’s 6’6” and 235 pounds, ranked as the No. 1 player in the state and a top-100 national recruit. He picked OU over Oklahoma State after visiting both schools, joining a strong 2025 class that’s in the top 10 nationally with 18 commits.
Nickson shines on both sides of the ball at Weatherford High. OU plans to use him as an edge rusher, where he’s made 100 tackles, nine tackles for loss, and four sacks over two seasons, showing off his speed and size. As a tight end, he caught 34 passes for 577 yards and five touchdowns in his junior year. OU’s defensive ends coach, Miguel Chavis, recruited him hard and sees him as a big-time pass rusher. Nickson on the basketball court averages 16.5 points and 6.5 rebounds.
With offers from schools like Georgia, LSU, and Notre Dame, Nickson chose to stay home, boosting OU’s recruiting under coach Brent Venables. He’s part of a defensive ends class with another four-star Oklahoman, Alex Shieldnight, and helps OU lock down six of the state’s top 10 2025 prospects. His size, skills, and local roots—he’s from the same high school as current Sooner Ethan Downs—make him a key piece for OU’s defense as they gear up for the SEC.
