Lions giving one more shot to Marcus Davenport makes a lot of sense, even if it doesn't seem like it

Last offseason the Detroit Lions underperformed when it came to finding players to help out on the edge. The one guy that they did sign was former 14th overall pick Marcus Davenport.
The one thing everyone knows about Marcus Davenport is that he gets hurt a lot, but when he's healthy, the guy can play. We saw that in Detroit. In the early going he had seven pressures and a sack in the first two games of the season.
Then he suffered another injury. This time a season ending one. To be fair, this one game on what still looks like a dirty play.
It doesn't really matter though because the narrative of him being often injured is there and he lived up to it again, even if this one seemed to be caused by another player.
The Lions are looking past that and they have decided to sign him to a one-year deal "worth up to $4.75 million." We put that in quotes because once the final contract details are likely to show that he's going to have to jump over some obstacles to get that amount.
The fit is there and that's why the Lions are taking this very small risk in hopes that it works out. Again, it can't be disputed that when this guy is on the field, he can ball. He just needs to prove he can do that and I would guess that the leash is short on this one. Short enough to if he gets injured at camp, he may not make the 53-man roster.
Lions fans may be initially upset about the move, but this not going to be the only thing the Lions do at edge this offseason. They have talked so much about depth this year and this is going to be one of those depth moves. I wouldn't even expect him to start. If he can be a depth and rotational guy and stay healthy, the reward is so worth the risk.
