As former LSU All-American offensive tackle Will Campbell stepped up to the podium at the 2025 Scouting Combine, everyone knew what the main topic of conversation was going to center around. It was going to be about his arm length, or lack thereof.
Most people believe that Campbell is a very good offensive lineman, but does he have the general length and foot quickness to counteract some of the more talented pass rushers on the NFL level? That is the bigger question.
Campbell did not shy away from the conversation. He even provided some league feedback he’s gotten.
"A lot of teams I have talked to see me as an offensive tackle," Campbell said to the media. "I told all of the teams that I feel like I have put stuff on tape to show I can play tackle at a very high level. I am willing to do everything I can to help the team win. If you told me I was going to start at right guard versus being a backup at tackle, I would tell you to put me at right guard.
"I think I have shown everything I need to on tape to show I can play tackle at an elite level. If you look at my tape, there is not one play out there where you say, ‘that is because he has shorter arms.’ Obviously I don’t have stereotypical offensive tackle arms but I am aware of that, and that is something that I use in my gameplan and preparation for to how to attack defenders."
Even with that NFL feedback, there are going to be many people who question the positional outlook for Campbell. We can have the debate over arm length forever, but there is historical data that backs up why people have question marks. Campbell did send out a cautionary tale to those naysayers.
"Obviously people have to nitpick something, Campbell continued. "I have heard it all my career. When I was coming out of high school, the college coaches said the same thing and I proved them wrong. That is something that I anticipate doing again. Like I said, I don’t have the stereotypical offensive lineman arm length when you draw it up in your mind but everything is blocked with your feet. That is where I excel. I feel like I can match up with anyone that I need to."
Campbell is in play to be the top offensive lineman off the board in April. Where the NFL values him is still a little bit of a question. How highly he goes will depend on whether a prospective team values him at tackle. If some view him as an interior player, he could slide slightly in the 2025 NFL Draft.
