The Washington Commanders got lucky when they selected Jayden Daniels to be their quarterback last year. But you know what?
Daniels got kind of lucky, too.
That's because he landed with an organization that's clearly all in. Since Josh Harris' ownership group came into town, it has proven how serious it is about turning what was once one of the laughingstocks of the NFL into a serious contender in the NFC.
On Saturday, we got yet another example of it: The Commanders are trading for star wide receiver Deebo Samuel from the San Francisco 49ers and while he's due $21.7 million in 2025, he was a cheap acquisition from a trade compensation standpoint.
According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, it's a fifth rounder the Commanders are giving up to land Samuel.
With Daniels throwing the football and offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury calling the plays, Samuel is going to be a dangerous weapon in Washington. With the 49ers, he proved to be much more than a reliable pass catcher.
He's knack for yards after the catch and versatility to be a play-maker even when lined up out of the backfield makes Samuel the ultimate puzzle for defensive coordinators to solve when facing him.
Put him in the backfield and have a cornerback cover him, and you'll have to tackle Samuel as a ball-carrier in the box with a defensive back. Match him up against a linebacker and you'll pay the consequence for it when he inevitable runs a route.
For years, Samuel was the top "easy button" for San Francisco. Getting him to Washington will make Daniels' life significantly easier while also fixing one of the top needs on the team. But the best part might be that the Commanders keep proving the NFL world they're willing to go all the way to build a team that will get them to a Super Bowl-contending position once again.
The Commanders will likely have to address Samuel's contract year in the near future, however, so this story is only getting started.
