The Ohio State Buckeyes were at a crossroads following the 2023 season with uncertainty around the quarterback position when Kyle McCord entered the transfer portal.
Of course, it worked out perfectly for the Buckeyes with Kansas State transfer Will Howard. Howard was the exact piece the Buckeyes needed to help them win it all.
It isn’t often you see a QB put up solid numbers like McCord did in 2023, then decide to transfer. When it happened, many rumors were floating around. One of those was that McCord and Day were no longer seeing eye to eye.
McCord took part in the NFL Scouting Combine this past week and opened up about just that.
“It wasn't an easy conversation, and he's someone that I respect a ton. So I'm going to keep the details of all that kind of private,” Mccord explained regarding the conversation with Day that he would be transferring. “But like I said, it was cool seeing him win. And then R.J. Day, his son, reached out to me and congratulated me on a great season as well. So, I know people try to make it seem like we hate each other or whatever, but that is not the case at all. I know that I was rooting for him all season long and I know he was rooting for me as well.”
McCord’s numbers took a big jump with Syracuse in the ACC. As a senior, McCord threw for 4,779 yards, 34 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. The former highly touted recruit threw for over 450 yards twice in 2024 with the Orange.
Ohio State needed to go in a different direction with a better fit. A quarterback with the ability to use his legs and get tough yards was needed, as well as a strong vocal leader. McCord has leadership qualities in his own right, but Howard stands out more in that aspect.
McCord upped his draft stock and should hear his name called on Day 3 in April. It all worked out for both sides and there was never any animosity either way.
