Ohio State Buckeyes put together a special run to end the season that no one saw coming after they lost to Michigan in the final regular season game in November.
After losing to the Wolverines for a fourth straight team, Ryan Day rallied his team and the Buckeyes put together a wild four-game run. Wins over Tennessee, Oregon, Texas, and Notre Dame were impressive for the Buckeyes in December and January.
That win over Oregon was the big one for Ohio State outside of beating Notre Dame to win it all. After losing to Oregon early in the regular season, Ohio State avenged that loss in the quarterfinal of the College Football Playoff.
Oregon WR Tez Johnson made a comment that raised some eyebrows while at the NFL Scouting Combine this week.
“The first Ohio State game, I felt like they came out there and they wanted to see who can win skill for skill, just let us play. The second game, they kind of played it like, ‘we're going to drop back, we can't hang with these guys skill for skill’, so we’re going to try to keep everything in front of us,” Johnson stated.
With that quote, Johnson is clearly pointing to the fact that Ohio State couldn’t match up with Oregon in terms of skill. Ohio State had to use the drop-back passing game to defeat Oregon.
Ohio State jumped out to a 34-0 lead before Oregon scored in the rematch. The Buckeyes held on for a 41-21 win and they put up 500 yards of offense to Oregon’s 276. Chip Kelly’s offense was balanced that game with 181 rushing yards and over 300 passing yards.
TreVeyon Henderson, Quinshon Judkins, Jeremiah Smith, and Emeka Egbuka all had really strong games against the Ducks the second go around. That is a lot of skill that the Buckeyes had on display.
Quite the comment from Johnson on his way out, who had five catches for 32 yards against OSU in the CFP. Maybe this was a subtle shot at the Buckeyes, or maybe it is how he feels. Either way, the Buckeyes handled business and Oregon was outmatched the entirety of the game.
