Titans GM Mike Borgonzi passes first critical milestone at 2025 NFL Combine
No reason to rush
NASHVILLE — Tennessee Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi seemed unbothered by all the buzz at the the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine. Holding the No. 1 overall pick in April's draft brings scrutiny and pressure.
Borgonzi is in not in any rush.
Titans need stability from Mike Borgonzi
Having the top pick in the NFL Draft gives Borgonzi significant leverage in his first year on the job.
“It's so early on in the process," Borgonzi said on The Buck Reising Show. "To make a decision like (trading the No. 1 overall pick) without hitting all these touch points would be crazy. So you have to go through the whole process here.
"And so once we get through the process, if we feel like there's a player there that we're comfortable taking with at one, we're going to take them. And if we feel like there's an opportunity for us to trade back, to add more picks in the draft, we're going to do that as well. So I think that's why this next month, month and a half, is going to be a big opportunity here for this franchise to make the best decision for it.”
That we are into March and no one definitively knows the direction Tennessee wants to head in at the top of the draft is a good thing for them. My sense, though, is that a trade to add additional draft capital in the Top 100 picks is Borgonzi's continued priority.
Saying that in public benefits the Titans none.
Giants reportedly interested in trading for Titans No. 1 overall pick
Plenty of teams will be interest in trading up with Tennessee.
The biggest question, obviously, is determining the kind of offer that makes moving back appealing enough to Borgonzi. No such deal might exist. According to Connor Hughes of SNY, the New York Giants expected to "to concentrate their efforts on getting the No. 1 pick from Tennessee, and pairing the QB they select with a veteran."
New York's failed pursuit of Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matt Stafford increases the Titans leverage in any potential deal.
Tennessee's demise as an AFC contender to the worst team in football over the last three seasons (16-51) happened fast. Failure to draft game-changing talent remains at the crux of their issues. Borgonzi is not carrying the baggage of former GMs Jon Robinson or Ran Carthon's failures at this year's combine.
He and his staff have put in the work, have managed the media interest and maintained reasonable expectations to this point.
"I was (with the Kansas City Chiefs) for 16 years, so we weren't just going to Super Bowls every year when I first got there, Borgonzi told media during his podium session. In 2012, we had a 2-14 season where we had to rebuild it. So yeah, there's some things throughout that process that I'll take, just in terms of building the core positions that you need on the roster, offensive line, defensive line.
"And then also just trying to build the culture right too, to try to get the right type of people in there as well. People who are smart, tough, dependable, selfless players, team players. So that's what we're looking for right now."

Don’t call it a comeback
