Ever since head coach Marcus Freeman took over the Notre Dame football program, the Fighting Irish staff has continued to value NFL bloodlines. That includes the acquisitions of Bryce Young, Jerome Bettis Jr., Elijah Burress, and Kennedy Urlacher over the last couple of recruiting classes. They clearly value that pedigree in a big way.

In the 2027 recruiting class, it appears that Notre Dame is once again targeting talented sons of former NFLers, and this one will make you feel very old. Argyle (Texas) Liberty Christian safety Cooper Witten is one of the very best defenders in the 2027 class, and he will be checking out South Bend for the first time on March 22nd.

That is a part of a big recruiting swing that Witten is taking this offseason. He and his family will also be checking out Michigan, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Clemson, SMU, Texas Tech, and Texas A&M.

His father, Jason Witten, was a legendary tight end for the Dallas Cowboys. During his 17 years with the Cowboys and Las Vegas Raiders, Witten hauled in 1,228 receptions for 13,046 yards and 74 touchdowns. He was named to 11 pro bowls.

Witten is already regarded as one of the very best players in the 2027 recruiting class. He is rated as the No. 23 overall player and No. 1 safety in the class according to the 247Sports Composite ranking. They also have Witten pegged as the No. 4 player in the state of Texas.

Despite still only technically being a sophomore, Witten has demanded the attention of a long list of prominent programs. Some of Witten’s top offers include Michigan, Oregon, Oklahoma, LSU, USC, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Auburn, Arkansas, Missouri, TCU, Kansas State, Texas Tech, SMU, Baylor, Duke, and West Virginia among others. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Notre Dame join that list in the near future.

In nine games as a sophomore, Witten managed to record 45 total tackles, five interceptions, and eight pass breakups. The 6-2, 210-pound defender also forced a fumble, recovered another, recorded a sack, and blocked a punt.
