The Kansas City Chiefs filled an underrated need with their latest signing during the 2025 NFL free agency legal tampering.
According to multiple reports, the Chiefs are signing former Los Angeles Chargers CB Kristian Fulton on a two-year deal worth $20 million, with $15 million guaranteed money.
Fulton, 26, is a former second-round draft pick out of LSU in 2021 by the Tennessee Titans. He's appeared in 57 career games with 51 NFL starts over five seasons. During that span, he has recorded five interceptions and 32 passes defended, along with a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, nine tackles for loss, and a sack. He saw a bit of a resurgent season in 2024 with the Chargers after a pedestrian final two seasons in Tennessee.
Fulton follows the Chiefs' long-time trend of targeting players who are Louisiana natives. Chiefs senior personnel executive Willie Davis (then-area scout) spoke about this after the 2020 NFL draft.
“If you go watch these kids practice, I think first off it starts with how they practice," Davis said. "They really work those kids down in Louisiana. They understand what it takes before game time, the preparation and everything that needs to go into preparing before playing the game. I’ve watched LSU and Louisiana Tech and I’ve watched them for 13 years now, nothing’s really changed. They practice hard, they prepare and they understand how to be professionals before game time.”
Fulton's contract might seem like a lot right now, but the Chiefs had a significant need at the cornerback position heading into this offseason. Not only did they see what the defense looked like with an injured Jaylen Watson in 2024, but they also have a future need at the position. Watson, Trent McDuffie, and Joshua Williams are all pending 2026 free agents, which means a multi-year deal with Fulton should help the Chiefs offset some of those potential losses in 2026.
