Every year we always hear that the Chicago Bears are offseason champs only for the results to crash and burn by the time the season comes around, but this time the offseason does feel different in Chicago.
It all started with the organization breaking off from the norm by parting ways with Matt Eberflus early and then replacing him with the top prized coaching candidate in Ben Johnson.
Johnson clearly wanted to be in Chicago and be the man to turn this team around. And the Bears believed in him too, paying high dollar to pry him away from the Lions.
A lot of people were upset about that in Detroit, including some of his former players on the offensive side of the ball. And some in particular are beginning to recognize the changes taking place in Chicago under Ben Johnson.
For starters, the Bears have absolutely revitalized the offensive line, something this organization as struggled to accomplish across multiple front office regimes. Before free agency even started, the Bears landed a former Pro Bowl guard and a back-to-back All-Pro guard, THEN went out to land the top center on the market.
According to ESPN's Dan Orlovsky, he believes those three additions alone are enough to turn the offensive line from a bottom 10 unit into a potential top 10 unit in the entire league.
That's some serious improvement for a unit that allowed their rookie quarterback to be sacked a league-high 68 times. But the offensive line hasn't been the only focus.
The Bears also added to the defensive front landing a potential breakout candidate in edge rusher Dayo Odeyingbo and a veteran leader on the interior in Grady Jarrett on the first day of free agency.
Chicago wasn't scared to throw out some money to make these additions happen, and rival players in the NFC North are starting to take notice.
"The Bears have unlimited f****** money, this s*** is crazy," Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown said on his podcast. "They're just breaking everybody off. They have unlimited money… Ben's just making moves left and right."
After learning he was landing the head coaching job with the Bears, Johnson already set the tone with St. Brown, his former star wide receiver, for what to expect in this Bears-Lions rivalry going forward.
Th Bears are going after this thing with Johnson leading the way in hopes of finally becoming a force that can compete with the big dogs in the NFC North.
Now, this sounds like the same song and dance we see every offseason from the Bears, but I'm telling you, things are different with Ben Johnson calling the shots. The Bears overhaul is just getting started, but it only matters if they prove it on the field.
