One possibility immediately speculated upon when the Los Angeles Chargers released star defensive end Joey Bosa could be closer to happening. The San Francisco 49ers have Nick Bosa on their roster, and their decision to release veteran Leonard Floyd on Tuesday opened significant cap room and a valued role.
The two never played together at Ohio State, though, so this would be a pairing that hasn't been seen since St. Thomas Aquinas High in 2012. Joey was a senior in high school, while Nick was a sophomore.
Michael Silver reported late Monday night that the 49ers and Miami Dolphins had outstanding offers of less than $10 million in 2025 to Joey Bosa. With Floyd's money cleared, the 49ers have cleared about $85 million in dead cap and have $31 million available.
The Bosa brothers reunion is now more possible than ever.
Beyond the cool aspect of reuniting the Bosa brothers, the 49ers have the perfect situation for Joey Bosa.
The older Bosa has clear durability issues, as he's failed to log more than 503 snaps in each of the last three years. Turning 30 this summer, he's unlikely to get much better without adjusting his role.
Still incredibly effective at pressuring the quarterback and holding his own in run support, Bosa can be a high-end platoon player alongside his brother. He also wouldn't break the bank, fitting into San Francisco's short-term cap needs.
Joey produced 148 tackles, 51 tackles for loss, and 26 sacks at Ohio State from 2013 through 2015. He was a two-time All-American and the 2014 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year.
Nick played at Ohio State from 2016 through 2017, including two years next to Chase Young. Young just scored $51 million from the Saints.
The last elite Ohio State pass-rusher scores massive new contract after rocky start to career
The Ohio State Buckeyes are coming off a College Football Playoff run where their pass rush was a main component for their winning streak. As well as J.T. Tuimoloau and Jack Sawyer played for the Buckeyes throughout their careers, though, their impact paled compared to Chase Young's. Young was so productive and disruptive that he […]
The younger Bosa was less accomplished in college despite being a tremendous presence, totaling 77 tackles, 29 tackles for loss, and 17.5 sacks. His junior season was cut short due to an oblique tear.
Since then, Nick has proven to be one of the elite forces across the NFL. The five-time Pro Bowler, one-time All-Pro, and 2022 Defensive Player of the Year has 62.5 sacks in 82 career games.
Joey has been great when healthy. Also a five-time Pro Bowler, Joey Bosa has 72 sacks in 107 games, but he's missed significant time in five of his nine seasons.
