One year after Michigan Wolverines running back Donovan Edwards was featured front and center on College Football 25, EA Sports is looking to highlight the program again. Now an annual release after breaking records as the highest-selling sports video game of all time, College Football 26 will be available to players this summer.
The Wolverines will not only see incoming 5-star freshman Bryce Underwood on the cover, but program legend Denard Robinson will be on an alternate cover. This Legends cover will at least have former Florida quarterback Tim Tebow as well, but additional details aren't available yet.
The fact that Underwood was the Wolverines' chosen representative before he played a down is quite telling. The nation's top recruit flipped from LSU to Michigan late in the process.
First, it's the reality of how different this Wolverines roster is today than its National Championship-winning team. Everyone knew that was a one-shot opportunity with the oldest roster in college football history, but the turnover has been stark. Even 2024 stars Kalel Mullings, Colston Loveland, and Will Johnson are gone.
The other aspect is the expectation around Underwood. While he may start the year behind veteran quarterback Mikey Keene, added from Fresno State, no one believes Underwood will finish the year as the backup. A lot is riding on the Michigan native to be the program's guiding light for the next few years.
Head coach Sherrone Moore wasn't one of the program leaders in Pasadena, California, at the Rose Bowl for the photo shoot, either.
With Underwood joining Florida quarterback DJ Lagway, LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love, Alabama wide receiver Ryan Williams, Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith and safety Caleb Downs, Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt, and South Carolina EDGE Dylan Stewart, it's clear EA Sports expects Underwood to be the new face of the program almost immediately.
Robinson's inclusion as the program's featured legend is also interesting. Of course, Robinson graced the cover of the final NCAA Football 14 edition before it went on a hiatus from 2014 until 2024.
It's a nice nod to how players latched onto that final release before a lawsuit disrupted the annual series. While Robinson is far from one of the program's most accomplished players all time, he is one of the few recognizable stars from an era where the program struggled to find its footing.
