The Oklahoma Sooners' basketball season ended on Friday night, in a way that has some mixed emotions. On one hand, the Sooners had some really bad moments this year. On the other, they beat some good teams down the stretch.
They ended the season playing their best basketball. But, against a team like UConn, that just won back-to-back National Championships, it just wasn't enough. Sure, that UConn team isn't what it once was, but they are still coached by maybe the best coach right now in college basketball, with a very talented roster. As for the Sooners, they have had way too many coaching errors this year, with a roster that is very one-sided throughout the year.
And in order for the Sooners to get to that point, where they don't have a roster that either goes on long shooting droughts, or a roster that has no size inside, or a roster that can't rebound — they're going to have to start spending more money when recruiting. Good players cost more money, that's just the world we live in today.
And, head coach Porter Moser knows that — he didn't hold back after OU's loss to UConn on Friday.
"I'll say this, to get your basketball program good, you have to win in April and May. You have to win in April and May with the NIL… For us, retention — we have to win in April and May in the NIL," Moser told reporters. "I'm so proud of how these guys fought through. Every year we have been in the No. 1 conference in the league. Our competition, with the NIL with what we have, is to be able to compete. I'm so proud of how hard these guys fought, and I'm excited for the future."
But, UConn is beatable. They very well may not be a team that wins another game, as they are now forced to play Florida, the favorites to win it all. But, as Moser alluded to, the program needs better players to compete, and that starts with having more NIL to spend and use.
The Sooners have had this issue for a while now. Basketball is the little brother sport to football, and softball, and right now you may even be able to argue baseball with how good they're playing.
2026 4-star running back committed to Oklahoma Sooners just got a very enticing offer from SEC foe
That would be a crazy flip.
