Notre Dame falling short in wide receiver recruiting once again, and parts of the fanbase continue to ignore obvious red flags

There is a lot to be excited about if you’re a Notre Dame football fan. Head coach Marcus Freeman looks like one of the better coaches in the country, and you’re coming off of a 14-win season and National Title appearance. Things are trending upward, and fast.
Under Coach Freeman, this Irish staff has also recruited on a high level, at least for the most part. One position that has been trending in a very poor direction is wide receiver recruiting under Mike Brown. That spot continues to be alarming, and doesn’t seem to be getting much better.
On Friday, Mansfield (Texas) High School top-100 pass catcher Zion Robinson released his top seven schools list. Despite a lot of interest from Notre Dame, they were not on it. That list did include Miami, TCU, Baylor, Texas Tech, Stanford, Arizona, and Illinois in an interesting mashup of prospective schools.
Robinson is highly regarded from a recruiting rankings perspective. He currently sits as the No. 71 overall player, No. 7 wide receiver, and No. 10 player in the state of Texas. That’s obviously quite the compliment with how much top talent the state consistently puts out.
Outside of his finalists and Notre Dame, Robinson sports a healthy offer list. Some of the other top programs that have offered him include Texas, Michigan, Oklahoma, Oregon, LSU, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, Florida, Michigan State, SMU, Arkansas, Kansas State, Vanderbilt, Kansas, Illinois, and Purdue among others.
As a junior, Robinson hauled in 34 receptions for 485 yards and eight touchdowns. The 6-4, 180-pound athlete also added another 76 yards rushing on the ground, and is expected to make a massive jump as a senior.
It’s only March. Notre Dame can flip someone in the end. Recruits need to see a big season from the passing game. Notre Dame is a running football team anyway.
There have been a lot of excuses thrown out there, and not a ton of accountability taken so far. After the horrible process we saw in 2025, everyone expected better for the 2026 group. So far, it has continued to be very underwhelming.
The board is already getting painfully small, and quickly. Notre Dame was high on several 2026 wide receivers who have already committed to other schools such as Connor Salmin (Clemson), Naeem Burroughs (Clemson), and Trent Mosley (USC). It appears you can add Robinson to that list soon.
This board is getting smaller and smaller by the day. There are still some really talented players like Kaydon Finley and Brayden Robinson on the board, but there aren’t many 2026 wide receivers who have spring visits set right now. That is alarming.
There is a reason to believe that the board is going to expand soon here, and some are going to look at that and just shrug it off. Anyone telling you 2026 wide receiver recruiting is in a good place isn’t being completely honest. The same issues are beginning to repeat themselves under Coach Brown.
