Ohio State had a star-studded transfer portal class last season and it helped take their roster to the next level.
The Buckeyes brought in Ole Miss RB Quinshon Judkins for a season and he was the exact piece that they wanted to add to the backfield. Ohio State once again brought a running back in with experience this offseason and he will have an impact too.
Former West Virginia RB CJ Donaldson Jr. is set to be a key piece in Ohio State’s backfield as a senior in 2025. The former Big 12 standout has already made one change that will help him take his game to the next level.
“I’m 18 pounds lighter. I’m 226 pounds now, I was 243 I think the day when I got here,” Donaldson told the media after Wednesday’s spring practice. “Coach Mick said, ‘That’s going to change, quickly’. Coach Lock (Locklyn) wanted me to get down to a size where I could still use my physical attributes, and be more explosive in the run game, and play more downs than I did at my previous university.”
After losing Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson to the NFL, the Buckeyes have a lot of production to replace in the backfield. Sophomore James Peoples is going to see a ton of action in his second season. Sam Williams-Dixon and freshman Bo Jackson are also names to watch.
Donaldson had 798 yards and 11 touchdowns as a sophomore in 2023, then had 734 yards and the same amount of touchdowns in 2024. Known as a big, bruising running back who has some speed, Donaldson is going to be quicker than he has ever been in his college career.
A one-time right end, Donaldson is already turning heads in Columbus and is primed to have a big role for the Buckeyes in 2024. He isn’t necessarily a household name right now, but he will be down the road.
News like this on the second day of spring practice about Ohio State’s potential starting running back in 2025 shows that he is off to a promising start.
