The Denver Broncos had to endear a very tricky situation last offseason. They were stuck in voluntary workouts with maybe their best offensive player not even there. It made headlines, and everyone was checking in every day to see what the update was.

Star wide receiver Courtland Sutton just wanted some more guaranteed money. He had stuck with the franchise through some of the darkest times, and just had a pretty good year the season prior. So, why not? And, two years before an extension, why would he go out there and play with no guaranteed money, and risk getting injured? I mean, he watched it happen to Tim Patrick in training camp two years in a row, so he was only looking out for his own best interest.

And now he's in a contract season, which means he's likely looking for an extension. But will the Broncos have to deal with the same tricky situation this offseason?

“There’s no timeline," head coach Sean Payton said on Monday during the NFL Owners Meetings in West Palm Beach, Florida. "I’m excited that he’ll be there whenever we get going, and we’ll go from there. But I know there isn’t any timeline.”

Last season, Sutton finished with over 1,000 receiving yards and eight receiving touchdowns. That was good enough to lead the team in both categories, but by a wide margin in the receiving yards. You could double Marvin Mims' receiving yards, as he had the second most, and he still wouldn't have what Sutton had.

He's been the most consistent part of the passing game over the last few years. He hasn't been a top-five guy, or even a top-ten guy at the position, but he is an elite red zone threat, and you know exactly what you're going to get from him every week. He was Bo Nix's security blanket.

So, yes, he deserves an extension.
