Late last week, ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler pointed out the Dallas Cowboys as a team to watch that could potentially trade for New England Patriots backup quarterback Joe Milton.

Milton, a former Tennessee Vols quarterback, has been the subject of trade rumors this offseason after accounting for two touchdowns and totaling 241 passing yards in the Patriots' win against the Buffalo Bills in the 2024 regular season finale.

Those trade rumors intensified after the Patriots signed veteran quarterback Josh Dobbs to a two-year deal earlier this month.

Dobbs, who is also a former Tennessee quarterback, is expected to serve as the primary backup to starter Drake Maye in 2025.

105.3 The Fan's Bryan Broaddus confirmed this week that the Cowboys are indeed interested in trading for Milton.

"Just hearing some whispers from various people that they're going to maybe dip their toe in the pool here and see what they get," said Broaddus when asked about the Cowboys' interest in trading for Milton. "Talking to people around the league, it sounds like New England really doesn't want to trade Milton. But if they do trade Milton, it would probably be for a fifth round pick. And that's probably where Dallas is kind of thinking right now as far as do they want to move one of the multiple picks they have this year or could you maybe think about giving a 2026 pick."

If the Patriots do end up trading Milton to the Cowboys, I wouldn't expect it to happen anytime soon (unless Dallas offers more than a fifth round pick).

On one hand, trading Milton now would potentially give the Patriots another selection in the 2025 NFL Draft. But if they wait until training camp, when injuries are always a possibility, they might have more leverage, which could lead to a better 2026 draft pick as compensation.

We'll see how this saga plays out, but it's definitely starting to feel like Milton will be wearing a new uniform at some point in 2025.
