The NFL tweaked the rule surrounding throwback/alternative uniforms this week at the NFL owners' meetings, doubling the maximum number of games they can be used.
The Bucs had the option under the previous rule to wear their throwback jerseys twice each season. However, in recent years, they've only chosen to exercise that option once each year.
In 2023, the Bucs introduced a throwback theme for their game against the Detroit Lions, donning the creamsicles and using a throwback font and style for social media posts and features in and around Raymond James Stadium. They did the same thing last season against the Atlanta Falcons. It didn't end up being a case of "look good, feel good – feel good, play good", as Tampa Bay dropped both games.
However, the throwbacks are revered by a significant portion of the fanbase, and the atmospheres at Raymond James Stadium with the retro look have been entertaining. Adding in a second home game with the promotion seems like a logical next step – if the Bucs were to do anything more than they are now.
Some teams have chosen to wear their throwbacks on the road – such as the Miami Dolphins with their classic retro look. However, that doesn't seem like something you'd expect the Bucs to do, as they haven't yet taken advantage of that even once so far. They appear very content to wear their normal uniforms on the road.
As such, perhaps we could see one more home game in the creamsicle look in 2025 – if even that. We'll find out later in the year if the Bucs decide to surprise and do any more than what's been the status quo.
