Shedeur Sanders is hoping to hear his name called first overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, and it looks like he is electing to make a choice that has him following in the footsteps of some of the top quarterbacks in recent years.

In what is becoming a growing trend, top quarterbacks are electing not to put their arms on display during the NFL Scouting Combine. Last year, the quarterbacks that went on to be the first three picks in the 2024 NFL Draft, Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, and Jayden Daniels, all elected to do their throwing at their college's Pro Day instead. Sanders is the latest to make that choice.

If not throwing at the combine would prove to have any sort of adverse affect on draft stock, we wouldn't see this becoming a trend. However, it hasn't proved to be costly. In recent years, plenty of top quarterbacks have elected to skip throwing at the combine, including:

  • Caleb Williams
  • Jayden Daniels
  • Drake Maye
  • Joe Burrow
  • Bryce Young
  • Kyler Murray
  • Robert Griffin III
  • Derek Carr
  • Andrew Luck
  • Matthew Stafford
  • Tim Tebow
  • Jamarcus Russell

Sanders will be relying on four years of tape, instead utilizing the week in Indianapolis to focus on interviews and allowing NFL front offices to get to know him as a person. When investing in a franchise quarterback, it's as much about the person as it is about the player.

Scouts and front office personnel will still get to see Sanders throw, as he'll elect to do so at the University of Colorado Pro Day at some point this spring, which the date of has not yet been set.

At this point, there's no word as to whether or not Miami quarterback Cam Ward, the other quarterback widely considered to be vying for the first overall pick, is going to throw at the Combine. If he does and Sanders doesn't, that will certainly have the opportunity to create an interesting conversation heading towards the NFL Draft.
